Squatting, Pine & Humans

So my Rock Partridge started squatting! Practicing for laying basically. This is a great sign she will be laying soon! They are all now 25 weeks old. I’ll update everyone as they all start doing this. She is the first one so far.

I’ve also followed the advice of many of you and started using pine in the coop and straw the the egg houses. Of course now they are munching on the new pine =/ I hope once they get used to the pine they will stop eating it. Thanks for the tips everyone, I think the pine will be more absorbent.

Another thing, the chickens keep thinking they are human. They hop up on the back steps and keep trying to get into the house. I think they miss it from their brooder day haha. Anyway, I feel loved <3

babe chicks started around the times yours did will usually lay after winter in the spring! sometimes before though... my barred rock/rhode island reds are about the same age and my farmer/animal savvy family friend told me :) ... actually i might have read it from a barbara kingsolver book

Thanks! I actually started to see my Partridge squatting so that seems like a good sign =) The rest haven’t shown any signs yet. Thanks for the info!

Ok so the chickens are officially 23 weeks and none of them are laying yet. I am hopeful they will lay soon, it is sort of bad timing, the weather here in Los Angeles has been getting colder and with the sun setting earlier everything is working against them. They are still darn cute though. You can see how their combs and waddles are super red now…

Around 8AM I let the chickens out of their run to free range, I usually let them free range all day, unless we leave the house. I was sipping my morning coffee on the back steps when the neighbors cat jumped on the wall separating our houses and proceeded to stare me down. I really hate cats. I was thinking the cat was eying the chickens so I was paying close attention to him. All of the sudden I hear wings flapping and a couple of squawks! A hawk flew down to the very back of my yard where the chickens were hanging out. It was attacking the white one, I threw my coffee, yelled at the hawk and made a beeline to the back yard. The asshole hawk flew away, and the chicken wasn’t harmed. Meanwhile the chickens scattered, the poor white chicken was traumatized and the barred rock as well. I rushed them into the coop and shut the door. Now, where are the other two? A few minutes later the partridge made her way out from behind the trash cans and I rushed her into the coop. I had to wait an hour for the RIR to pop out from the back bushes, vines, berries, etc. I thought she might have escaped the yard at one point. Anyway, now I am completely freaked out and never want to let the chickens free range again, unless I’m out there of course. I really hate hawks… and cats. I bet that cat just wanted to watch a show. What a dick.

Duckson always let’s me know when she’s hungry. Quack quack quack… She thinks all the neighbors need to know as well. I had to give Duckson a route up to the nesting boxes because she thinks she’s a chicken. Her and henny penny are literally inseparable.
